Stillwater Fire Tower, To get to the mountain by Jun 21, 2017 · The famed surveyor Verplanck Colvin built the first tower on Stillwater Mountain way back in 1882. Jun 21, 2017 · Stillwater’s tower was climbable for the adventurous the last three decades, but now it truly is in proper shape to welcome visitors, thanks to the Friends of Stillwater Fire Tower. At the end of the 1988 fire lookout season, the tower ceased fire lookout operation. The tower was reopened in July 2016 and is in excellent condition — both the summit and the tower itself offer gorgeous, far-reaching views. Near Old Forge at the westernmost edge of the Adirondack Park, Stillwater Mountain is a short, rewarding hike crowned by a recently renovated fire tower. Stillwater Fire Tower Trail ascends 1. Note that Big Moose Road turns into a dirt/gravel road about 8 miles before the trail head. The current 47' Aermotor model LS-40 tower was erected in 1919 by the New York State Conservation Commission, now the NYS-DEC. There are great views from the fire tower.
